HD Calling

With HD calling or VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol), inbound and outbound calls happen over the internet instead of through your carrier.

Let's go over the details.

Why use HD calling?

HD Calling offers several benefits, including:

  • Save on cellular minutes.

  • Make calls over Wi-Fi when cellular reception is weak.

  • Make free international calls to other Dialpad users.

  • Access in-call features like hold, transfer, and recording, etc.

Turn on HD calling

You'll have the option to turn HD calling on/off for inbound and outbound calls.

To turn on HD calling, open the Dialpad app on your device

  1. Go to Settings > Calling Preferences

  2. Select Call Experience > Select HD Calling

Switch between HD and carrier

Switch your call to your mobile carrier when you're on a 3G network or want to reduce cellular data usage.

To switch to your carrier:

  1. In an active call, select the More menu (that's the three vertical dots)

  2. Select Switch to carrier

Note

Switching to your carrier requires cellular service.

Tip

On an HD call but heading out of WiFi range?

As long as you're connected to a 4G or higher cellular network, Dialpad automatically switches your call to cellular data, so you don't need to do anything.

Link your mobile number

Link your mobile number to your Dialpad account to make carrier calls from the Dialpad app and receive incoming calls correctly.

If your mobile number is also a forwarding number, calls may be sent to both your mobile carrier and the Dialpad app.

Tip

On iOS, answering one can cause the other to disconnect. Linking your number helps prevent this by sending calls based on your Call Experience preference.

To link your mobile number, open the Dialpad app.

  1. Tap your profile picture
  2. Tap Calling preferences
    calling-preferences
  3. Tap Link Cellphone Number for this Device
  4. Tap Add new number
    link-number
  5. Enter your cell phone number
  6. Tap Call to verify now
    link-number(2)
  7. Next, choose how you want to receive calls
  8. Tap Call Experience
    • Select HD Calling to receive calls in the Dialpad app.
    • Select Carrier to receive calls through your mobile carrier.

Once your number is linked, Dialpad uses your Call Experience preference to send incoming calls to the right place, so you can answer normally.
