# Supported User and Room Phones

Dialpad provides configuration and provisioning support for many popular phones and room devices. If you're looking for instructions on setting up a user’s desk phone or conference room phone, check out these articles on [setting up a user desk phone](/v1/docs/manage-a-user-desk-phone) or [setting up a room phone](/v1/docs/manage-a-room-phone).

Let's dive into the details.

> [!NOTE]
> Difference between room and user phones
>
> Room phones are perfect for shared company spaces such as conference rooms, reception areas, or phone booths. They are not associated with a user account and do not have voicemail capabilities.
>
> User phones are desktop phones assigned to a team member. When their Dialpad number is called, that user's desk phone will ring.

## Supported devices

Dialpad is compatible with a variety of devices, each offering different features. We prioritize platform compatibility over strict versioning.

> [!NOTE]
> Note
>
> We perform extensive quality assurance testing for all supported devices, but we do not test every firmware version. The recommended firmware is the version already installed on your phone. Unless you are experiencing an issue that a specific update can resolve, we do not suggest changing it. While a specific version is rarely a prerequisite for eligibility, Dialpad Support may recommend an update as a primary troubleshooting step to address performance issues or known bugs. If you experience any issues or have questions about firmware versions, please contact [our Customer Care Team](https://dialpad.com/contact-support).

> [!TIP]
> Firmware guidelines
>
> To ensure service stability and security, Dialpad automatically applies a minimum functional firmware version upon device activation. Our system respects newer software and will not downgrade a device if it is already running a version more recent than our minimum requirement. Additionally, Dialpad periodically pushes firmware updates to maintain security and provide access to the latest features.

## Generic SIP registration

Dialpad will provide SIP credentials that can be used with many different generic SIP devices.

Dialpad is only responsible for validating that the registration credentials are still valid. Support for firmware or other functionality on the generic device must come from the device manufacturer.

This solution is often used for IP based door bells, paging solutions (such as Algo) and others.

> [!NOTE]
> Note
>
> Generic SIP devices don’t support E911 or international calling.

## Activation

When phones are purchased from Dialpad, they come out of the box ready to be activated with Dialpad.

If a supported phone was purchased elsewhere, it can still be used with Dialpad, but additional setup steps might be required.

Be sure to read our Help Center articles for more information on [Poly Obi](https://help.dialpad.com/docs/provisioning-vvx-250-350-450-obi-edition-devices-to-dialpad) or [Yealink](https://help.dialpad.com/docs/configuring-yealink-devices-to-dialpad) phones.

## Tracking adoption

Office admins can track the adoption of company-issued devices like laptops, mobile, or desk phones straight from their [Dialpad analytics.](https://dialpad.com/analytics/)

Apply your filters and navigate to **Calling Habits**. Here, you'll see a breakdown of device usage.
