# Send & Receive Messages in Dialpad Meetings

Want to ask questions during a presentation without interrupting? Both Organizers and Participants can easily send and receive messages during a Meeting.

Let's look at how to send messages in a Meeting.

> [!NOTE]
> **Who can use this**
>
> In-meeting messaging is available to all Dialpad Meetings users.

## Send a Message in a Meeting

To send a message during an active Meeting, select **Chat** from your bottom bar.

1. Select where you want to send the message:
  - **Everyone** for the public meeting chat
  - A specific participant for a private 1:1 chat
  - Multiple participants for a group chat
  - **Internal chat** (if available) to message only teammates from your organization
2. Type your message

3. Add an image or GIF, if needed
4. Select **Send** or press **Enter**

If the slide-out menu appears, you'll receive messages there as well. Without the slide-out menu open, new messages are displayed in the top-right corner of Dialpad Meetings.

Keep in mind that Admins can [enable or disable chat](/v1/docs/control-meeting-settings-for-team-members#allow-in-call-chat) for team members.

## Chat Types in Dialpad Meetings

Dialpad Meetings supports multiple chat types so you can communicate appropriately based on context.

****Everyone (Public Meeting Chat)****

Messages sent to Everyone are visible to all meeting participants and are best for general questions, links, and shared resources.

****Private 1:1 Chat****

A private 1:1 chat lets you direct message a specific participant during the meeting. Only you and that participant can see the conversation. The host cannot see the chat unless they are part of that conversation.

To start a private 1:1 chat:

1. Open the **Chat** panel
2. Select the participant's name
3. Type your message
4. Select **Send** or press **Enter**

A new private chat thread appears separately from the main meeting chat, and unread messages are indicated in the chat panel.

****Group Chat****

A group chat creates a private conversation with multiple selected participants. This is useful for side coordination, such as between presenters or panelists.

To create a group chat:

1. Open the **Chat**panel
2. Select multiple participants
3. Start typing your message
4. Select **Send** or press **Enter**

The group chat appears as a separate thread, distinct from the public meeting chat.

****Internal Chat****

Internal chat allows teammates from your organization to coordinate privately during a meeting. Internal chats are separated from the public meeting chat and are never visible to external participants.

Internal chat may be available:

- When there are both internal and external participants in the meeting
- When only internal participants are in the meeting, depending on the configuration

This is useful for:

- Sales deal strategy during customer calls
- Interview panel coordination
- Executive meeting alignment

### Switch Between Chat Threads

If you are using multiple chat types during the same meeting, you can switch between:

- Main meeting chat
- 1:1 chats
- Group chats
- Internal chat

## React to a Message

You can react to any message with an emoji.

1. Hover over a message
2. Select the **Reaction** icon
3. Choose an emoji

The emoji reaction appears below the message. To remove your reaction, select it again.

## Chat Logs for Meetings

Looking for a log of messages from a Meeting? First, ensure that you've [enabled this in your Meeting settings](/v1/docs/adjust-your-meetings-settings#other-meeting-settings-toggles).

![](https://cdn.us.document360.io/0f28ad44-2863-4372-a27e-c6728808d742/Images/Documentation/meeting-chat-logs.png)

Once you've done that, future message logs will appear in your Meeting history.

1. Select **Menu** from your Dialpad Meetings dashboard
2. Select **Meetings**> **History**
3. Select **Chat Log** from the desired Meeting ![](https://cdn.us.document360.io/0f28ad44-2863-4372-a27e-c6728808d742/Images/Documentation/chat-log.png)
4. Select **Download Chat log** ![](https://cdn.us.document360.io/0f28ad44-2863-4372-a27e-c6728808d742/Images/Documentation/download-chat-log.png)

Your chat logs will open in a new browser tab.

## Host Controls for In-Meeting Chat

Meeting hosts can manage chat permissions during a meeting. Hosts can:

- Enable or disable chat entirely
- Enable or disable private 1:1 chats, group chats, and internal chats
- Enable or disable emoji reactions
